Saturday night lights..the pitch ready..the team in yellow striding forward with the flames burning on either side. The Molineux with all its flags and the sound prepared to create a hostile atmosphere for the away team.
Not a common sight some 7 years back.
Their last season in the top flight was a disastrous one seeing the wolves end bottom of the table.Clearly the club needed a proper structure if they aspire to be a regular team in the first division of English football.
Then came the Portuguese power. A man from the ranks of Porto arrived in a drive to change the club’s fortunes.Posing a bald figure with a grey beard;doesn’t look so English but certain enough to have them now fighting for a place in Europe. The man.. Nuno Esparito..
Nuno coming along with his Portuguese influence and with the aid of Jorge Mendes has been able to put up a side capable of getting all 3 points against the “Big Six”
As much as seven first team players are Portugal by nation ; a number that only clubs like Porto Or Benfica can match.
One of the bright young talents that was on the scouting list of every big clubs some two years back was Ruben Neves. He was certainly probing clubs to sign him with his stunning performance in the midfield, week in week out.But no one expected him to move to the then-Championship side at the 17-18 window. His move was questioned by many pundits alike but it looks like they were wrong. He is right now lighting up the Prem with 3 goals and 2 assists;not one bit bad for a CDM.
Raul Jiminez has also been another player defying expectations this season bagging up 15 goals and 7 assists in all competitions. They also have the attacking talents of Diogo Jota, Ruben Vinagre and also the pace of Ivan Caveleiro and Adama Traore in the wings.
Their midfield has the perfect balance of Neves, the experience in Moutinho and the young talented Dendoncker. The latter was a big prospect in Belgium with Anderlecht and he seems to have no difficulty in adapting to the physical conditions of the EPL.
Their defense is one of their cracks in their gameplay but for a first season in the big stage after seven years;we have seen far worse. They do have a strong centre back in Boly and the asset of having Rui Patricio as their first-choice keeper.
Wolves are also under the ownership of the Chinese business giant, Fosun International making finance in transfers not a problem in Wolverhampton these days
The team in yellow aren’t gonna stop anytime soon. Europe is reckoning for them this season after 5 decades. They have got a fantastic coach with 10/10 performing players and a proper structure at the back of all this. The big teams aren’t gonna feel the “this is an easy one” when they play wolves anymore. With their win against United in the Fa Cup a benchmark of their rise and certainly nuno would like to add a cream to the topping by lifting the cup but the season isn’t over and all focus is on the remaining games and try to get the best scenario at the end of May.And wolves will only reach to further heights if they keep hold of their players and use the transfer money to fill up the little cracks.
So don’t be surprised when you see a team from Wolverhampton occupying your major part of the football section in the papers ; the hungry wolves are on a reign to be the best.
